  • Hey there, Baxter Andrew has scheduled a new post for your Instagram profile @glen2glen When you venture down to the sea at Whaligoe Steps near Lybster on the Caithness coast, you can imagine the fisherfolk of yesteryear making the same journey. The vertiginous descent and the reascent require care in wet weather, so imagine what that was like with baskets of fish loaded on your back. At the small harbour below you will find the remnants of a long-gone fishing industry. There are the ruins of a salt store used to cure fish and a hand-powered winch used to haul boats ashore. Look out for the large circular pit. This is a barking kettle where tar was heated and used to waterproof nets and floats.   • Hmmmm...that's a bit fishy! I can't see any water in today's #YCW2020 photo. Don't worry it definitely fits the Year of Coasts and Waters theme. The 'Mermaid of the North' sits upon a rock on the beach at Balintore. She's a beautiful 10ft high sculpture and is an enchanting depiction of the mythical creature.   • Many visitors head to Fort William to climb our highest mountain Ben Nevis. Yet from the town itself, you can't see most of the mountain and nothing of the summit. The best views are across Loch Linnhe from the town. You could go to the lochside at Corpach, where you will discover this photogenic old wreck with Ben Nevis in the distance. Another good alternative is to drive the narrow single track road on the far bank of the loch, where you get splendid views from near Achaphubuil or Treslaig. These are a familiar sight for cruise passengers heading into the Cromarty Firth to dock at Invergordon. It's an important service base for the North Sea energy industry.   • It's off to the East Coast for today's 2020 Coasts and Waters photo. Aberdeen is a bustling city, made prosperous by the offshore energy industry in the North Sea. Yet, just a short walk from the city centre you can enjoy a bracing walk along the beach, with the North Sea waves breaking by your feet. This photo includes the distinctive harbourmaster's control tower guarding the entrance to the harbour. It looks a little rocky but just a few footsteps away and you will be strolling along a lovely sandy beach. As you wander along, keep an eye open for the Art Deco Beach Ballroom. It's said to be home to one of the best dancefloors in Scotland, as it floats on steel springs giving dancers an extra bounce. There is so much going on during the year, with festivals and events around Scotland. And I will be launching some new tour ideas based on our coasts, lochs and rivers.
